Calum McCutcheon is a Welsh multidisciplinary artist working across painting, installation, film and music. Using play to lead direction and valuing process over outcome, his work serves as therapy and a tool for introspection. Calum paints intuitively, creating cathartic, private expressions that evolve with his mental state. The surfaces of his works are often layered, scratched, burned, or collaged, resulting in a physical record of emotional processing. He uses found objects and follows curiosity. Rummaging through skips and finding everyday materials in overlooked places helps to keep him mindfully engaged and feel connected with his surroundings.
His installations are aimed to help the viewer, by creating environments that encourage a child-like sense of fun and wonder, meant to be experienced more than understood. “I process ideas as 3D spaces and use installation as a way to communicate them”. Informed by his personal experience of seeking help, Calum reimagines psychotherapy processes as kinetic visual expressions that playfully challenge perception and encourage self reflection in others, seeking to broaden conversations around mental health.
Calum studied BA Fine Art at UWE Bristol, graduating 2016, where he continues to live and work.
