I make non-functional pareidolic forms in stoneware and high-fire terra cotta. I’m interested in movement, (in)stability, (dis)trust, liminality and the uncanny.
Most of my pieces are like curious anthropological finds, or clouds, or like 3D Rorschach tests – they are abstract and simple but reminiscent of lots of different things. I love to hear what people see when they look at my work. (No judgement, promise.)
If a piece of my work has a purpose or an intent beyond being looked at, it’s being touched. Many of my pieces wobble or rock. I like to keep xylophone mallets around in the studio to hear what they sound like. I leave the clay body glaze-free, where appropriate, so that the texture of the clay, as well as tool and finger markings remain visible, but more importantly available to be touched, held, felt.
