Craft knowledge is more than just a set of skills; it is an integral part of the design process of all kinds of things from chairs to space shuttles. The skills required to make things (and make them well) foster creativity, problem-solving and innovation. However, the role of craft in society is declining, specifically in education. This artwork is called “Scorched Craft – The Wainwright’s School Desk”. It highlights the vital role of craft in education and celebrates the endangered craft of the wainwright. Made from British Ash, the desk’s scorched surface represents the decline of craft in modern education. However, through intricate carvings that reveal the fresh timber beneath, the desk illustrates the potential revival of craft knowledge when properly nurtured and valued.
